Push a button and your car will spin around ready for you to drive straight out of your garage. We kid you not, this is the most exciting parking solution since valet parking, but better, because you can take it home. The really exciting thing is this technology is designed, engineered and manufactured right here in Bendigo, at Australian Turntables.
This Bendigo based company has been manufacturing and fitting turntables all over Australia and globally since 1987. The concept, so simple it’s genius, was devised by Gordon Chapman. At 86 years of age and still working in his engineering job shop, Gordon built himself a turntable to help exit his home. It worked really well so he mentioned to one of his sons, Paul that there could be an opportunity. Thirty years later Paul has Gordon’s business sign hanging in the production office at Kangaroo Flat as a reminder of beginnings.
“This is an innovative solution to save space, improve efficiency and safety,” says Ben Chapman, Gordan Chapman’s grandson and Australian Turntable Managing Director.
If parking is a bit tight at your place, if you are backing onto a busy road, or like Gordon you would like to make daily life easier for yourself, Australian Turntables will have you in a spin. This clever innovation can be incorporated into your new home design to free up space for other things; or fit a turntable into your existing home or driveway to improve efficiency. Either way, this is sure to bring wow factor to your home, and at a price point that is surprisingly accessible for something that can bring life changing efficiency for many people.
Designers will be pleased to know the turntable can be finished into almost any appearance to match the design around it, be it paving, tiles or exposed aggregate. Some projects have been finished in timber, rubber, glass and acrylic. “We even supplied a turntable for a client who finished it with the Lamborghini logo!” said Ben.
The opportunities continue as road authorities and councils put tighter controls on parking as roads become busier and housing development lots become smaller. “Regulations specifying that your new home or renovation project allow for vehicles to enter and exit the site in a forward direction are becoming more common now,” said Ben. “This ruling is intended to reduce the number of cars backing onto the road, to improve safety, and to minimise disruptions to oncoming traffic. Architects and homeowners now have this option to maximise space without sacrificing the beauty and amenity of your property.”
This innovative local company provides turntables not only to the residential market but to commerce and industry as well. Be it a truck turntable in Azerbaijan, a 100-tonne capacity mining turntable in the Pilbara, a relocatable construction turntable used in tight construction spots in inner Sydney, or the world’s largest revolving restaurant in Iran – it’s all come from Australian Turntables, right here in Bendigo.
