Lockwood district is believed to have been settled by Europeans around 1840 when Charles Sherratt established the Mount Alexander (North) No. 2 run. Various outstations were set up in the Lockwood area, and it was Jack Kennedy, a shepherd, who opened the first Happy Jacks Hotel in Panorama Drive in Lockwood South after his wife Margaret found gold at Golden Square.


Old maps reveal that small subdivisions were present along what is now the Calder Alternative Highway, particularly along the creek where the soil was regarded as appropriate for market gardening. From 1860 until the 1890s, several vineyards were established along Bullock Creek. In 1863, gold was discovered along Bullock Creek, leading to a few mining operations in the area.

Lockwood North Primary School commenced operations with either 23 or 29 students in 1864 and has continuously operated since then. Its name changed to Lockwood in 1950. The Lockwood South School started as a church school in 1859 before coming under the Education Department's supervision in 1873. It remained operational until its closure for five years starting from 1950.
