Houses For Sale In Quarry Hill, Vic, 3550
Quarry Hill is known for its proximity to the city centre and stunning natural vistas. The area was initially called Charcoal Gully. In 1857, an Anglican school was built there, later replaced by Sandhurst East State School, renamed Quarry Hill Primary School in 1908 and moved to its current location on Peel Street in 1910. The name of the area originated from a building stone quarry, but its location remains unknown as it was later filled.
Victorian heritage
Quarry Hill boasts many notable buildings showcasing Victorian and Edwardian architecture, such as The Eyrie (1874) in Reginald Street, Edelweiss (1890) in Hamlet Street, and Penwinnick (1895) in Harkness Street. Penwinnick was built by William Vahland for John Robert Hoskins, a timber merchant and two-time mayor of Bendigo. Edelweiss was built for Sir John Quick, a constitutional lawyer and parliamentarian from Bendigo who served on various committees after retirement. The Eryie is on the Victorian Heritage Register along with the expansive Bendigo Cemetery further down the hill.
Walking distance from Bendigo's city centre, Quarry Hill has a strong community that makes locals are reluctant to leave. Wolstencroft Park's Halloween and Winter Solstice get-togethers have become popular with families both inside and outside the area.
